Recycling Facts you should know!

Paper: Each ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4,000 kilowatts of energy and 7,000 gallons of water! Everyday, U.S. businesses generate enough paper to encircle the Earth 20 times. Each year, the amount of wood and paper we throw away is enough to heat 50 million homes for twenty years. Newspaper: Every Sunday, Americans waste 90 percent of recyclable newspapers. This wastes 500,000 trees! Recycling a single run of the Sunday New York Times would save 75,000 trees. If all the newspapers in the U.S. were recycled, we could save 250 million trees per year. Every year more than 900 million trees are cut down to provide raw materials for American paper and pulp mills. One tree can filter up to 60 pounds of pollutants from the air each year. If we recycled only one-tenth of the newspapers, we could save 25 million trees per year. Half of the Earth‘s forests are gone. 95% of the original forest area in the U.S. have been cut down. If everyhousehold in the U.S. replaced just one roll of 70 sheet virgin fiber paper towels with 100% recycled ones, we could save: 544,000 trees, 1.4 million cubic feet of landfill space, equal to 2,000 full garbage trucks, 196 million gallons of water, a year's supply for 1,500 families of four, and avoid 33,400 pounds of pollution Glass: Recycling one bottle saves enough energy to run a 100-watt light bulb for 4 hours. Recycling one ton of glass would save 380 gallons of oil, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 4000 kilowatts of energy and 7000 gallons of water. Glass never breaks down and can be recycled forever. Aluminum: Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a television set for 3 hours. American consumers and industry throw away enough aluminum to rebuild the entire U.S. commercial air fleet every 3 months.
